Scott Wehrwein

Fall 2025

For this assignment, we’ll read two news articles related to “predictive policing” - the technology and practice of using data to predict crime, with the goal of more effectively allocating law enforcement resources.

Readings

Read the following news articles:

  1. LAPD ended predictive policing programs amid public outcry. A new effort shares many of their flaws (PDF Link)
  2. Researchers use AI to predict crime, biased policing in major U.S. cities like L.A. (PDF Link)

It’s not required, but if you’re interested, you can also check out the scientific paper that is the subject of the second article:

Precise Event-level Prediction of Urban Crime Reveals Signature of Enforcement Bias

Pre-Discussion Prompt

Submit to Canvas a short (1/2 to 1 page) reflection addressing some or all of the following questions: 1. Briefly, what is the case from the perspective of law enforcement for using predictive policing and other data-driven technologies? 2. Briefly, what is the case against the use of predictive policing technology? 3. What is your position on the use of technologies like this? For example, should they banned, as they have been in Santa Cruz? Should they be used, but with stipulations? Should they be used without restriction?

We will have an in-class discussion on this topic on Wednesday, 9/22.
